I have been a 49er fan for over 40 years. My friend introduced me to the game in the early 1970's.Read More My parents, my siblings and I had moved down here from Toronto, Ontario Canada in 1967. In Toronto at that time the big thing was and it still to great part it still is, is Ice Hockey. I knew virtually nothing about the sport but became a rabid 49er fan in no time. I remember John Brodie, Gene Washington and many of the other players of the great teams of the early 70's. Unfortunately it seems we could never get past the dreaded Cowboys in the playoffs. I was devastated by the Super Bowl 47 loss last February. I have several friends where I work who are fans of other teams. The one thing I could always hold over their heads was the fact that the 49ers had never lost in a Super Bowl despite several trips to it. Alas I can no longer make that claim. Colin Kapernick is a great athlete and a gifted quarterback, however in my humble opinion he was not ready for a game of that magnitude. It didn't help that after he took the reigns from Alex Smith it seemed that the defense let down. I call it the Kapernick affect. It seems that after he brought the team back from a deficit more than once, it seems the defense assumed that he would always do so. Sometimes you dig too big of a hold to climb out of and that is what happened in the Super Bowl. In my heart I believe that if Alex Smith were quarterback in the Super Bowl, the score never would have gotten so out of hand. Granted Alex Smith does not have the athletic gifts of Colin Kapernick, however he is a steady quarterback who never would have let the score get so out of hand. The previous year when the 49ers and the Ravens played, I believe the final score was something like 13 - 7. We now have Colin as quarterback and as fans we have to believe that this year will be better than the last. The only way it can be is if the 49ers win their sixth Super Bowl. I in my heart of hearts believe that they will do so.
