This article focused on the Top 100. In comparison, rankings of 290 and 432 are not stellar.

Patch – you got it completely wrong; South City schools are thriving!
Here’s a quote…Read More from the US News & World Report Best High Schools Ranking Survey Results you linked to:
“South San Francisco Unified School District
California's SSFUSD contains three high schools. The district contains two schools that received gold, silver or bronze medals in U.S. News's Best High Schools rankings.”
The USN survey results included El Camino HS and South San Francisco HS in their list of Best High Schools in the U.S.
Out of the 1200+ high schools in California, El Camino was rated #290 out of the BEST 600 and SSFHS was rated #432, and both received silver medals, but you say they “are struggling”? Did you read the ranking survey results? You wrote that our schools "are struggling by comparison,” but you fail to define "struggling", nor do you explain what you are comparing.
Have you reported that SSFUSD’s graduation rate is the highest in San Mateo County? Have you done any in-depth reporting about our students’ academic improvements and successes, or challenges?
As a representative of the hard-working and accomplished teachers of the South San Francisco Classroom Teachers Association, I’m disappointed in your reporting. And Patch, if this were an assignment for one of our Journalism classes, I doubt it would pass Peer Review, and if graded, I’m pretty sure it would earn an “F”.

So from what I understand from the 2 comments made here so far, Fred thinks the man was a murderous…Read More scum bag, and wolfone believes Chavez was a good guy, everything connected with oil or failure is almost always George W Bush's fault, and Medicare is not going to help anyone when they get cancer. As for the article we have the owner of Pica Pica Maize Kitchen who is from Caracas mourning the death of his/her president. I find that statement most interesting, my immigrant grandparents after once stepping foot on US Soil NEVER referred to any president other that the President of the USA as being their president. I guess that is because they planned on staying here and wanted to be part of the USA not to just benefit from what the country has to offer. Who knows what that person is thinking or what they believe but, I find the statement "interesting" because I do not see or hear anything that is even similar from my good friends immigrant Asian wife, or my Marine nephew's South American immigrant wife who are now both naturalized citizens and they made that transition in less than 9 years.

Sounds like an excellent idea but get real, "Big Oil" won't be paying for this, we will.…Read More As with everything these greedy parasites do, the increased cost of doing business, that Oil Severance Tax, will be passed along to the consumer. Just open the paper and on a daily basis you will see that the oil industry will never be a positively contributing member of any community. If someone spills their coffee at a refinery, these clowns will use that event to spike the cost of their products. Hate to be the "reality check."

Hi Todd,
I hope to see you at the SBPSD Board meeting 7pm tonight where there will much discussion…Read More about the district's budget; including a report from an external financial auditor. Perhaps you can ask him do what degree he might (or might not) think that funds are are being wasted?

- In our private business, we are able to turn away poor performers and unprofitable projects, public schools are obligated to educate all kids, and deliver on unfunded state requirements. In many ways, they are already micromanaged.

If I am 100% honest with myself, and this goes against my core as somebody who manages people and…Read More projects for a living, I would micromanage the distribution of the education's budget. Before doling anything out I would look at each districts budgets and expenditures. As in look at their books. If balance their budgets in a true to real life way, as in the way we the people have to in our own lives and private businesses, and the budgets don't show tax dollars being wasted than they get moved up the list for more funds. If they do 1/2 of the have above put them in the pack in the middle of the list. If they do neither to bottom of the State's educational funds list they go.
Unfortunately due to budget trickery, such as using one time payments to balance the books, San Bruno would be in the middle of the pack.

Its an interesting idea. Now, though, who is going to pay for all the computers needed for these…Read More tests? To make the test fair, each student will have to take them at the same time. Where will the schools put them? Who will pay for IT staff to make sure they are operating properly? Who will pay the insurance for the computers, and for the extra electricity needed at each school site? Where are the facts behind the ability to implement this new plan? This plan needs more details explained.

Not only that, but CST participation rate is a metric for AYP, so a school that falls below the 95%…Read More threshold will not make AYP (not that that matters anymore, nor that it ever mattered for non-title1 schools like SM).
I would expect ongoing district assessments are used more than CSTs for placement for intervention given that there are more of them and they are more closely aligned with what is going on the classroom. If its true that schools are using CST results for individual intervention decisions, then I think parents should know that (and realize its probably a bad idea). Your school site council should have info on that since its job is to monitor things like that.
In any case, anyone who wants to opt out should also ask their child. They should have a say in the matter.
Louis Educe January 10, 2013 at 12:07 pm
Gail Ann, while you are correct on the parent opt out right please make sure and tell parents to ask…Read More the school/district what the STAR scores are used for with in the disrtict/school/grage-level. if the child is in the middle grades (7th and 8th are most important) these scores are used to make placement choices for high school courses. Many HS counselors will NOT look very closely at grades (A,Bs) because of the fear of grade inflation - unless you can make sure you child also have some non-biased, standardized (normed) test data their placement choices might be limited. If your child is a high performer you can have them start taking the PSAT in 8th grade (but they will be compared to 10th grade standards). At the lower grade levels the CST data is used to also make placement choices into intervention as well as higher level instructional clusters. Be well aware of the implications of withdrawing your child from the testing before you just exercise you right to "make a point"

Sounds like trouble to me. Perhaps many of those kids went without telling their parents where they really were. What does the California State "Gun Control Laws" (strictest in the nation) already…Read More address? I understand that some of what you propose is already covered in CA at least. What will insurance provide? How will a law forbidding ammo sales over the internet or banning assualt weapons stop people from committing illegal acts? Of the millions of LEGAL gun owners in CA how many are involved in illegal acts? As a former Police Officer I do not now see, nor have I ever seen legal gun owners as being the real problem. The problem I believe has always been the gang bangers and other “outlaws” who are in illegal possession of a firearm. Hunters and shooters are very often in compliance with the laws and have no malicious intent to violate such laws. Laws are ignored by criminals so where gun control laws are concerned all we often do is make more laws that restrict the freedom of those people who would likely never violate the law or commit an illegal act anyway. That is not to say that we should not have laws governing the ownership of a gun but do we actually need more gun control or ammo purchasing laws in CA. I do not think so.
