The U.S. House Appropriations Committee voted to include $5 million to build an earthquake warning system. Patch file photo.
SA July 16, 2014 at 11:33 am
Typical Democrat wanting to spend money like Brown’s crazy train. What is an early warningRead More system.. “brace for shock” ? What we need is an early warning system that warns us before a Democrat / Liberal opens his month.
Reginald "Rex" Henderson July 17, 2014 at 06:54 am
Just another extension of socialist Obama...
Rick Crockett July 19, 2014 at 10:38 am
Wow! Talk about Brown-Obama-Democrat Cronyism. Not only can the system be built and installed forRead More less than $500/node, it already has. I helped with one of the nodes with-in the past four years. The system (requiring less than 25 sq.ft. (donated) can be set up similar to a Home WiFi Security Cam with FTP access. Really it can be automatically monitored and maintained for free through a cooperating University. This is merely a $16 million a year hornswoggle going into the crony's pocket. Its dirtier than greedy profit. All that, lying cheating and stealing on top of it. Republicans in office don't deserve to be there because they do not study and know about the communities they represent or what they have already (and recently) funded. They are not doing their jobs in a two party system. Having formerly worked for the DNC the only thing good I can say about democrats is they at least learn their constituencies well enough to manipulate them.

To Robin: You left out all the men getting tanked at the Farmer’s Market and beating the crapRead More out of their wives … What is up with y’all wanting to kill somebody’s ability to grow a business? Y’all are commies …
Virginia Johnson July 15, 2014 at 03:51 pm
It would just be nice if our California Do Nothing Congress would put their time and efforts intoRead More helping our State with real problems instead of making their constituency feel like they are making a difference with alcohol and marijuana leniency laws. This is not real Government in action.
Virginia Johnson July 15, 2014 at 04:22 pm
p.s. Most of our Federal, State and Local Government Parks do not allow alcohol and that is whereRead More many Farmers Markets are located. How is this going to work out?

Make no mistake about it, they are going to be coming for your guns eventually, just a matter ofRead More time. They will first go for the "Registry" and I think the more informed of us all know that a registry has preceeded almost every gun grab in history. How did that registry work out for the Jews in WW2?

Suppose that within a mental evaluation for gun purchase, the citizen reveals a deeply held dislikeRead More and distrust of the Government. Some people would not want this person to be allowed to purchase just for this one "excuse." Suggest everybody focus on getting US corporations to return to the USA (from Asia) for all of their manufacturing. Nothing stops bullets like JOBS!

Note that this law would NOT have stopped the Isla Vista shooting because the parents did NOT callRead More the local mental health agency as well as the police. Note that by failing to check the California gun registry - available in every patrol car - they would not have even considered issuing such an order because they didn't think there were any firearms in the area - and neither did his parents, apparently. I have a lot of questions regarding this case - and one of them is that given junior had been making violent postings for more than a week or two, why didn't the parents cut off his funds and compel him to return home and be evaluated?

KMA: what is your point about how old is the S of L? Do you think wise philosophy has an expirationRead More date? Let's hope the sonnet by Lazarus is just as meaningful today as then. And, it's part of what makes the USA exceptionally great in the world and time. Of course, some limitations have to be included. These are embodied in the law. The problem today is that the law is not being enforced primarily because the head of enforcement and his minions want to let in more people who, they would like to believe, are likely to vote for their kind in the future.

Excellent news! Totally don't agree with the hate-fueled comment above. San Mateo has very fewRead More resources so far for the LGBTQ residents here and the demographic is clearly different than in highly urban areas. Given our location and the hub of technology innovation, creativity and cosmopolitan nature of our community, this is great.
Force Ten June 6, 2014 at 12:48 pm
Hate fueled? I was just stating facts. The whole "strive to be treated equal" creo is soRead More backwards. So this commitee was formed "to inform future policy decisions and further the cause of inclusiveness"? The more "special" committee's they need the more they separate themselves from everyone else.

I am 100% for LGBT rights, some of my close friends are gay and lesbian. That said, it is one thingRead More to be treated equally and another to be given special consideration and rights making it more difficult for others. We have seen this in the form of affirmative action and know it does not work. It is about equality for ALL. Having grown up in the 70s and 80s, and not been given equal opportunity due to affirmative action, I know the tide works both ways. I was denied a couple times because they were not accepting any white males into the academy. That is just as wrong and not accepting someone because they are LGBT or black or any other reason beyond their skills. So let us not forget history and how that does not work. LGBT community will gain greater acceptance by not excluding others as they have been excluded themselves.

Sorry Jeffrey, have fun. This is a waste of time and classic political pandering.

Jeffrey, as stated the independent Veterans’ Commission is in the works despite the lack ofRead More support from anyone in county government. Hopefully, if it comes to be it will not become like the SF Veterans’ Commission (according to a few of its members that group is very political). As for your proposed group, I have a few questions. Why should there be a LBGTQ Commission in San Mateo County? Are attacks on people living such a lifestyle on the raise? Has there been an increase in complaints of actual/verifiable discrimination because of sexual preference? How frequently are members of the LBGTQ community in San Mateo County being offended, and how often do they offend others? Not living a LBGTQ lifestyle or seeing such things occur I would not be aware of such information. So, my questions may sound dumb. I’d just like to know why is such a commission valuable to the citizens of San Mateo County? FYI. Where people are concerned I have just one very basic rule and I’ve found that almost everyone I know has the same rule: people are people and the very least important issue that we should be concerned about is something like a persons’ gender, or sexual preference. In more simple words I believe that everyone should be treated respectfully, and that good people like great gifts come in all kinds of wrappers, boxes, and colors and what they do speaks for who they are.
