Local Doc and Nurse to Be Honored for Service

Donated surgical services allows low-income and uninsured patients access to necessary procedures.

For many committed volunteers, service takes place at a school or soup kitchen, but for these doctors, it takes place at the operating table.

Anesthesiologist Dr. Daniel Kong has attended at least 15 surgical sessions over the past 11 years for low-income, uninsured patients. Operating room Nurse Gloria Brillantes has attended at least 12 sessions over the past 13 years.

Thanks to Bay Area non-profit Operation Access, which coordinates volunteer surgical and specialty care for people who would otherwise be unable to access it, these two  medical professionals have been able to bring their skills and expertise to the San Mateo low-income, uninsured community.

On Dec. 10, they will be recognized for their efforts at the Operation Access Spirit and Legacy Awards. The awards are given to those who are flexible, reliable, responsive and work to improve the Operation Access program, according to Joe Fragola, Kaiser spokesman.
