Local Boys & Girls Club Collects Donated School Supplies

The Staples for Students National School Supply Drive has teens donating supplies for their fellow students in South San Francisco and Pacifica this year, and it's backed by a teen celebrity.

The fifth annual Stables for Students National School Supply Drive is in full swing in South City.

Youth from South San Francisco and Pacifica are donating school supplies to go to the Northern San Mateo County Boys and Girls Club to help fellow kids be ready for the new school year.

To kick off the campaign at the beginning of July, Staples donated $125,000 worth of school supplies.

Teen Actress Bella Thorne, of the Disney Channel's Shake It Up, is helping to promote the drive, along with the national organization DoSomething.org.

Participants can drop off supplies at the Staples at 470 Noor Ave, or any other Staples until Sept. 15. Customers can also choose to donate $1 with any purchase.

“I’m excited to help motivate fellow teens to make a difference in their communities,” Thorne said. “There are so many kids in America who return to school without basic school supplies, and I’m thrilled to team up with Staples and DoSomething.org to encourage teens to lend a hand.”

Since 2008, the campaign has raised more than $2 million for hundreds of thousands of students around the country. Jordin Sparks, Ciara, Nikki Reed and the cast of Pretty Little Liars have all served as celebrity supportrs in recent years.

It's not too late to get involved. To get more info about how to jumpstart their own community to participate in the drive, kids can go here for the following:

  • Action Kit: Students can get tips, resources and flyers on running their own school supply drives in their neighborhoods.
  • Text SUPPLIES to 38383: Students will receive more information on how to begin their own school supply drive or find their nearest Staples drop-off location (standard text messaging rates apply).
  •  Raise Your Hand: Teens can raise a virtual hand to the cause by uploading photos and videos or sharing details through social media. For every “hand” raised, $1 will be donated by Staples (up to $10,000) to the cause.
