4th of July Fireworks & Events: Something for Everyone

San Mateo County still has two Fourth of July fireworks shows, but this year, one of the locations has changed.

It's time to paint the town in red, and in white, and in blue.

Parades and potato salad, fireworks and free beer, cherry bombs and bratwurst; they're all part of next week's annual Fourth Of July summer spectacular.

To sort it all out, we wanted to compile for you a Patch guide of Fourth Of July events going on in our area.

Fireworks

There are again two cities for viewing fireworks this year in San Mateo County, but one location has changed.

, budgets being what they are.

Projectiles will head into the sky - ready to explode - at 9:30 p.m. sharp.

And thanks to Redwood City, pyrotechnic fans have a second choice for viewing if Foster City doesn't work as well as a location for you.

begin a litle earlier, at 9:15 p.m. at the . The show is back on track after a two year break.

Parades

Redwood City's parade is one of the largest on the Peninsula, and offers good viewing spots for spectators around as well as some fun floats to see. It begins at 10 a.m.

Half Moon Bay's annual Pooches on Parade begins at noon.

And Menlo Park has a small parade that begins at 11:45 a.m. at the Wells Fargo parking lot.

Celebrations

. If you're ready to rumble early, festivities at Leo Ryan Park begin at 8 a.m. and last into the evening just prior to the fireworks.

Redwood City's celebrations continue after the Parade, and will continue until the late evening fireworks.

Also in Redwood City, an Old-Fashioned Fourth of July begins at 10 a.m. at the , where children will be invited to hand-crank homemade style vanilla ice cream and then take a taste.

Palo Alto will host the between noon and 5 p.m., with tasting beginning at 1:30 p.m. You'll need to head to Mitchell Park for the fun.

Pacifica hosts its annual 4th of July Celebration at Frontierland Park between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.

, beginning with a Pancake Breakfast at 8 a.m., a barbeque at 11 a.m., the Pooches on Parade at noon, and the post parade Bark-BBQ.

The Millbrae Historical Society's annual July 4 Barbecue will be held in the David Chetcuti Community Room behind City Hall. The Lions Club does the barbecuing. The event begins at 11 a.m., runs to 3 p.m.

Menlo Park celebrates after its parade, so from about noon until 2:30 p.m. you can get hot dogs and other traditional summertime foods.

Runs

; it's your chance to compete in front of as many as 40,000 spectators. The run begins at 8:45 a.m.

Pacifica has the Rocket Run, a 5-mile jaunt that fills fresh sea air into the lungs of runners and makes for some happy smiles. It begins at 9 a.m.

+ + + +

Now, you'll need to make sure all the guests and family members escape the day with the reds of a sunburn, but not the blues and whites a bad case of July 4th food poisoning could bring, so for some free culinary advice.

You don't want to get caught with illegal fireworks, so read our that explains what you can and can't buy, and where.

For some sage advice on taking some great nighttime fireworks pictures, check out our photographer-in-residence, Stuart Nafey, who's got some for making those tricky-to-take pictures work.

You can check out with this link.

Finally, if you're going to do the celebration this year without the old car, the is abbreviated, so take note of what might work for you.

Which one has changed location?

I'm appalled that towns in San Mateo County continue to sell fireworks, no matter how "safe and sane.". Anything that explodes, no matter how small, is insanely dangerous in this tinder-dry, wooded environment.
Surely there's a better way to finance a Little League than endangering hundreds of homes and possibly killing dozens of innocent people... as happened in the Oakland firestorm of 1989. I'm all for patriotism and the thrill of "the rockets red glare, the bombs bursting in air." We have plenty of both, safely over Bay waters, at our public celebrations... no fireworks of any kind should be sold, or even allowed, in private hands anywhere in San Mateo County.
Pacificat June 29, 2012 at 10:44 pm
I agree with you, Michael. But good luck trying to pry those fireworks away from the folks who think it's their American right to light stuff on fire and explode things. My concern is that by allowing "safe and sane" fireworks in Pacifica, it encourages the stupid people to set off tons of illegal fireworks all over town, thus putting us all at risk. The police are overwhelmed and can do nothing, even though there's a "zero tolerance" policy. If all fireworks were illegal in Pacifica, we might have a fighting chance over time to reduce the very dangerous "unsafe and insane" fireworks problem.

I live in Vallemar and every year there are idiots in the back of the valley blowing off cherry bombs and fire crackers. It's extremely dangerous as this area is loaded with trees and greenery. Plus it scares all the pets in the area. If the police want to catch and fine people, please just come to Vallemar.

Hi Lou, The locations for watchers of fireworks have changed from Half Moon Bay and Foster City to Redwood City and Foster City.

Just a note, the Festival in Redwood City BEGINS at 9am! Come early to enjoy!

Come on down to Hermosa and you'll get to see tons of the illegal stuff!

Wow! The only truth on this page is that the people of San Bruno should give out free tissue boxes to these cry babies. I am sick and tired of not being able to sneeze without someone wanting to call a lawyer or a special quarantine unit . True fireworks can cause fires and the posey parade backs up traffic. Lead paint can harm you, every building I work in has chemicals known in the state of California to cause cancer. Not wearing my seat belt can get me a driving infraction. I just wanna say live a little pledge allegiance to your flag, honor and celebrate your beautiful country for a night or two! Remember the sacrifice your ancestors made so that you could enjoy these days the way you do. Light a sparkler, an m1000 or a mortar put your hand over your heart and look in the sky as you scream the pledge of alligiance. I have six children I reside here in San Bruno . We love to watch all the illegal fireworks all night. It beats packing them up in my car, sitting in traffic. Driving to some other town that I don't live in. Just to watch a few fireworks from very far away! Thankyou San Bruno for your patriotic spirit!

Ohhh and go sf giants. Project black n orange. On you tube for all you die hard giants fans!
Pacificat July 1, 2012 at 12:43 pm
What did I tell you? Some people think it's their patriotic right to blow up "m1000 or a mortar" and put us all at risk. I want to hear the pledge of allegiance when your house or car are on fire or you blow your hand off like my buddy did when we were 15.

I always find it mildly amusing and extremely ironic that all of the so-called environmentalists in Pacifica are nowhere to be seen or heard when it comes to fireworks. This happens every year - rain or shine. Of course, these are the very same people who don't want us to play golf, walk our dogs or build on our property because it will disturb their vision of the ecosystem. But when it comes to fireworks that clearly disturb wildlife and household pets, pollute our beaches, litter our streets and cause significant fire damage and human injury, the "environmentalists" are consistently MIA. Just wonder if anyone on this thread knows why. I suspect it has something to do with the sale of "safe and sane" fireworks in Pacifica and that, like the man says, "everyone has their price".
Pacificat July 3, 2012 at 01:56 am
This is one environmentalist who hates fireworks, precisely for the reason that it harms the environment and wildlife, as well as being a danger to humans and private property. I'm not opposed to golf, I walk my dog every day, and it's fine with me if you build on your property as long as you do so within regulations. I think you have a mistaken view of environmentalists. But the reason you don't see me out protesting about fireworks is that, like other environmentalists, I know it's a lost cause, a waste of time, and a battle that can't be won. Believe me, we have tried. But as demonstrated above, people seem to think it's their right to pollute, scare pets, and risk harm to people and property because fireworks are Amurkin, doncha know.
residentwithopinions July 3, 2012 at 11:48 am
Because it's their day off...that's why they're MIA.... what exactly are we celebrating this year?? Our freedom to choose our own healthcare has been taken away, who knows what the next freedom will be "limited" to or pay a tax, if the Obamazombies vote this guy in for another term. The people who pay the taxes are getting fed up! Our founding fathers are rolling over in their graves right now!
Jim Clifford July 3, 2012 at 12:12 pm
Did fireworks cause the Oakland fire? Not disagreeing about the dangers of fireworks, but I thought the cause was a barbeque, followed by poor fire control techniques.
Steve Hayes July 3, 2012 at 12:40 pm
Perhaps you should read more about the Bill rather than just listen to anti-Obama people. You still have the freedom to choose your healthcare insurance and people who refuse to pay for insurance will be required to pay a penalty. Of course we need some sort of National healthcare plan because the "private way" left out too many people, it excluded people with pre-existing conditions, it financially ruined families that exceeded lifetime medical limits, and it resulted in an endless cycle of staggering annual insurance price increases. The GOP wants to kill the bill but has offered nothing to fix the problems - they should get on board and help fix the remaining problems.
Lou Covey, The Local Motive July 3, 2012 at 02:07 pm
Fascinating. A piece informing people about where to see legal fireworks, turns into a screed about health care, patriotism and the presidential campaign. Obsess much?
Ladyice2 July 4, 2012 at 05:51 pm
Right on Victor! I always thought San Bruno was full of Stepford Wives anyway..They are there own unique brand of humans...
Jj zee an July 4, 2012 at 09:37 pm
Indeed, Victor. What better way to celebrate our freedom than by burning down the neighborhood. Our ancestors fought for us not to be inconvenienced in driving a few miles to see professional fireworks. Victor, feel free to light that m1000 and put it over your heart.
Lionel Emde July 4, 2012 at 09:43 pm
Hate environmentalists, do you? Well, we're all hiding under the bed with our dogs and cats tonight. I refer to this holiday as the "Idiot's Holiday." It's becoming an all- too-American attitude.
Pacificat July 4, 2012 at 09:50 pm
And tomorrow morning early, a whole bunch of environmentalists will be cleaning up the fireworks crap that the folks celebrating our American right to trash the beaches have left behind.
Doug Radtke July 4, 2012 at 10:14 pm
the 1989 Oakland fire had nothing to do with fireworks.

If it's their "right" to be stupid with fireworks, then it's my "right" to shout out the window for them to take it somewhere else and quit scaring our animals.
George Carlin on "Rights" is coming to mind right now. :) There are plenty of safe and smart ways to celebrate our Independence, but unfortunately, some people like to use the M-80s, and other obnoxious fireworks. Same people that think they're tough because they carry a weapon (usually a stolen one). "Duh. I like to hear big explosion noises to feel like a man. It's a free country, I don't need to clean up no litter I make in public. !@#$%? you!" Yeah. Way to represent your country. May the rest of us, enjoy the holiday with good company, food, and the kind of fun that won't cause fires, scare pets, and we'll clean up after our selves.
Carol July 5, 2012 at 02:20 am
So true Liz! My poor dog is hiding in a closet shaking even with two pills. Thanks SBPD as usual for your "zero tolerance"! I hope these idiots blow their hands off lighting this crap off!
