El Camino Baseball Title Tops City's 2010-11 Feats

CCS wrestling championships for Kelly and Nicholls and dramatic Bell Game also rank high.

With the 2010-11 athletic year in the books, here is a look at some of the top accomplishments from El Camino and South San Francisco High Schools:

1. El Camino Baseball: The Colts made school history by winning their , edging Burlingame and Carlmont by two games apiece. El Camino finished with an 11-3 league record and a 15-11-1 overall record. Senior Justin Eclavea led the team on the mound with seven wins, and seniors Steve Knudson and Trevor Kelly swung the bat above the .400 mark.

2. Wrestling: El Camino’s Trevor Kelly and South San Francisco’s Calvin Nicholls both captured a on Feb. 26 at Independence in San Jose. In the heavyweight division, the 285-pound Kelly, who also starred in football and baseball, pinned Seaside’s Jonathan Tuiolosega with 9.5 seconds left to earn the first-place medal. Nicholls, who helped the Warriors to a first-place finish in the PAL team tournament, defeated Bellarmine’s Dan Cerrillo in the 171-pound division.

3. Football: The Bell Game between South San Francisco and El Camino went down to the wire on Nov. 13, with South City pulling out – its seventh straight win in the rivalry game. Trailing 22-21, the Warriors were driving in the final minutes and faced a fourth-and-2 at El Camino's 17-yard line. South City running back Falah Salem took the handoff and was tackled near the marker, extending his arm to get the first down by inches. With 52 seconds now left on the clock, South City immediately scored with quarterback Brad Los connecting with Robert Johnson for a 15-yard touchdown. El Camino was unable to score before time ran out. The Colts had taken a one-point lead with 2:42 to go on a 5-yard touchdown pass from Omar Kharroub to Tajah Childs and a two-point conversion run by Nathan Huey.

4. South City Wrestling: The Cherokees earned the PAL Bay Division title with a 5-0 record, edging rival El Camino (4-1) and Half Moon Bay (3-2).

5. El Camino Cross Country: El Camino's Mario Roussanov finished sixth in the CCS Division III boys cross country race on Nov. 13 to lead the Colts to a sixth-place finish in the team competition. Roussanov negotiated the course at Salinas' Toro Park in 16 minutes, 43 seconds. Teammate Chance Vicino was 12th overall (11th for scoring purposes) in 17:10. El Camino finished with 186 points.

6. El Camino Boys Basketball: The Colts took second place in the PAL Bay Division with a 6-4 record and finished 17-11 overall after a run to the CCS Division II semifinals. Junior swingman Anthony Knight led the team in scoring (16.5 points per game), rebounding (6) and steals (1.9). The 5-foot-11 guard/forward erupted for 28 points twice, one against Overfelt and the other against rival South City. Despite losing most of its inside presence, El Camino will also return 5-6 point guard Elijah White. With the help of some solid rebounding and shot-blocking, the Colts could contend for the PAL Bay title with an explosive backcourt.

7. El Camino Girls Swimming: The Colts came away with a championship sweep -- winning the PAL Ocean Division dual meets title for the third straight year at 7-0 and then the league championship meet. Danica Alfajora and Rachel Lam both won two individual events and swam on two winning relays at the .

8. Track: South City junior Dominic Goodman in the triple jump with a leap of 42 feet, 1.5 inches, narrowly beating Woodside’s Anthony Hillerby (42-0.25). El Camino sophomore Stella Hall finished second in the 100- and 200-meter dashes.

9. El Camino Baseball: Senior first baseman Steve Knudson was named . He was a stud at the plate, hitting .500 for the season in 99 plate appearances, slugging .833, racking up 12 doubles, four home runs and 27 RBIs. As a right-handed pitcher, Knudson earned four wins. Seniors Justin Eclavea, Trevor Kelly and Tyler Rios were named to the first team all-league, sophomore Steve Pastora made the second team while juniors David Jimenez, Marcus Roman and D.J. Peluso received honorable mentions.

10. El Camino Softball: Senior Selina Rodriguez earned honors. Teammate Elaina Revilla made the first team.
