BOYS BASKETBALL: El Camino Falls to Lancers

St. Francis uses 24-point second quarter to take control in CCS Division II quarterfinal victory; Colts will return top two scorers from 17-11 team next year.

The Score: St. Francis 65, El Camino 49.

The Star: El Camino High junior Anthony Knight led all scorers with 22 points in his team’s Central Coast Section Division II quarterfinal defeat at Foothill College on Saturday afternoon.

The Turning Point: After matching baskets at the outset, the seventh-seeded Colts couldn’t keep up with No. 2 seed St. Francis in the second quarter. The Lancers (14-12) exploded for 24 points in the period to send El Camino (17-11) to the locker room with a 12-point halftime deficit.

The Bottom Line: The Colts, No. 9 in last week, held their own with No. 4 St. Francis, but the defending Northern California champion had too much depth and firepower. El Camino, which finished second in the Peninsula Athletic League Bay Division to Burlingame and , appears well-positioned to build on this year’s success. Next year, the Colts will return their two leading scorers in junior guard/wing Anthony Knight and sophomore point guard Elijah White. Though El Camino will graduate its starting big men, 6-foot-5 junior post Richie Mathiesen was a valuable reserve and 6-1 sophomore Michael Smith has also shown nice versatility.
