A floral parade for children, fire trucks, a Princess and a baseball game, too?
That's San Bruno's 74th annual Posy Parade, which begins at 1 p.m. Sunday in downtown San Bruno, winding its way to San Bruno Park where the festive day is culminated with a baseball contest. As is tradition, Parkside Intermediate will meet St. Robert's School in the annual Posy Parade Game.
Former San Bruno resident John Murphy of Prep2Prep.com reminisces about Posy Parades gone by and looks forward to this year's edition on his blog.
Said San Bruno Mayor Jim Ruane to Murphy: "This is an especially significant Posy Parade as we celebrate San Bruno’s Centennial and 100 years of progress. Although we are the headquarters of many major businesses, a transit hub and gateway to the world through SFO we cherish our history and traditions that keep us known as 'The City With a Heart'. "
Also reminiscing is former San Bruno resident Joe Krumm who now lives in Milwaukie, Oregon. Krumm's older sister Mel was the Posy Parade Princess in 1956 and his father Marty was the longtime treasurer of San Bruno.
"Mom would encourage us to be in the parade every year," Joe said. "We have film of brother Tom walking with the scouts. Kids would walks with their pets. I remember dance troupes. Mel has a scrap book of her big year."
The parade hit a lull in the early 1990s, according to U.S. Representative Tom Lantos, but never went away and is still very much part of the fabric of San Bruno.
Writes Murphy: "Here's what I do know -- the Posy Parade is Sunday, kids are marching as always, the Capuchino High band will perform, Mayor Ruane will be there and -- most importantly -- Parkside Intermediate will play St. Robert's School at 3 p.m. in the annual Posy Parade baseball game.!"
