A floral parade for children, fire trucks, a Princess and a baseball game, too?

That's San Bruno's 74th annual Posy Parade, which begins at 1 p.m. Sunday in downtown San Bruno, winding its way to San Bruno Park where the festive day is culminated with a baseball contest. As is tradition, Parkside Intermediate will meet St. Robert's School in the annual Posy Parade Game.

Former San Bruno resident John Murphy of Prep2Prep.com reminisces about Posy Parades gone by and looks forward to this year's edition on his blog.

Said San Bruno Mayor Jim Ruane to Murphy: "This is an especially significant Posy Parade as we celebrate San Bruno’s Centennial and 100 years of progress. Although we are the headquarters of many major businesses, a transit hub and gateway to the world through SFO we cherish our history and traditions that keep us known as 'The City With a Heart'. "

Also reminiscing is former San Bruno resident Joe Krumm who now lives in Milwaukie, Oregon. Krumm's older sister Mel was the Posy Parade Princess in 1956 and his father Marty was the longtime treasurer of San Bruno.

"Mom would encourage us to be in the parade every year," Joe said. "We have film of brother Tom walking with the scouts. Kids would walks with their pets. I remember dance troupes. Mel has a scrap book of her big year."

The parade hit a lull in the early 1990s, according to U.S. Representative Tom Lantos, but never went away and is still very much part of the fabric of San Bruno.

Writes Murphy: "Here's what I do know -- the Posy Parade is Sunday, kids are marching as always, the Capuchino High band will perform, Mayor Ruane will be there and -- most importantly -- Parkside Intermediate will play St. Robert's School at 3 p.m. in the annual Posy Parade baseball game.!"

I've lived in San Bruno for 65 years and the Posy Parade has always been a part of my families San Bruno experience. My brother and I participated in the Parade with "floats" we helped our parents put together starting in 1950 (the 10th annual Posy Parade). I was on the Parkside Posy Parade baseball game team in 1958; but, back then the game was against Millbrae's Taylor school team. And, my three children helped us build floats and participated in the Parade for years during the late 70's and 80's. Our floats were decorated with 100% flowers, the only way you could win a trophy back then was by having 100% flowers on your parade entry. In my basement I have just over 20 Posy Parade trophies (including 7 Grand Sweepstakes trophies) and I've still got the autographed baseball signed by the entire San Francisco Seals professional baseball team that was given to all the players in the Posy Parade baseball game in 58 (the San Francisco Seals were the first professional baseball team in The City, before the Giants).
