The West Orange Library is Awesome.

One of the things I really appreciate about South San Francisco is the library on West Orange.  If you haven’t been there, or haven’t been there recently, it is awesome.  I went today in search of tax forms and ended up having a really good time.

All of my time around books and magazines is spent about 85% online and about 15% of the time at Barnes and Noble at Tanforan.  Reading online and on my ereader (Nook or Kindle) is great- and it is a solitary experience.  If I like something at Barnes and Noble I have to buy it.  If you want to read a book at the library- it is FREE!!!  (Besides print books they have books you can read on your ereader as well:  http://plsinfo.org/ebranch )

It is really nice to read a book or magazine with other people sitting around doing the same thing.  I may not know these people and we may not be chatting with each other, but we form a community of readers nonetheless.  It feels good.

The librarians there are so nice.  They helped me renew my library card, offered to answer any questions I had or to help me find anything I might be interested in. I didn’t have to go find them when I was wandering through the stacks of books- they found me and offered to help- twice!  I wish I got that kind of customer service in book stores!

The library staff welcomed me back to the library, taught me how to use the self check-out machine and held some books for sale for me that I did not have the cash to buy at the moment (I live off my ATM card).

It was great was just wandering around the library.  Usually when I look for a book online my search is specifically directed, and I don’t wander around.  In the library I wandered around and found I was interested in an illustrated story about a zombie millennium. (Not my usual reading material, believe me!)

I really like their comfortable chairs, their friendliness, the light coming through the windows, the community of readers.  I haven’t checked out the library on Grand Avenue for years.  I bet it is awesome too.
