Mystery Man Hiding Envelopes of Cash Gives Clues Via Twitter

Mystery man giving away thousands of dollars to strangers through Twitter clues.

San Francisco, Calif. – A millionaire has been hiding envelopes filled with cash for strangers to find and his exploits are being followed on Twitter @Hiddencash.

The man announces clues via Twitter, and then people race to find the cash. A recent Tweet announced "Will be giving away money in San Jose on Wednesday. Stay tuned!"

The man behind @Hiddencash told ABC News he plans to expand the random cash drops to Los Angeles, New York and other places around the country. "An anonymous social experiment for good," the Twitter feed's description states.

ABC News reported that the man is a successful real estate investor who wanted to give something back.

"People complain that the price of real estate here is pretty high and I have benefited from that," he said by phone, after ABC News reached him via email. "I wanted to do something fun for the city of San Francisco, something that would get people excited."

One envelope of cash was taped under a table at an outdoor bar. Some have been taped to parking meters. Or left in the sand on a beach. After people find the cash they Tweet the pics.

ABC News reported that the man has given away $4,000 since Thursday, May 22. The amount of cash varies but it usually is $100 per drop.
