Solar Project Breaks Ground

Leaders from the school district, city and county gathered Thursday to break ground on SSFUSD's solar energy project.

On Thursday, leaders from the school district, city and county gathered for the ceremonial groundbreaking of the district's solar energy project.

The project, and managed by Chevron Energy Solutions, will build solar panels and make energy efficiency improvements at 15 district schools. It's projected to save the district $20 million over the life of the project.

"I thought it was interesting we were getting solar panels in a city that gets only two days of sunshine a year," joked Daniel Hirsch, a student school board trustee who spoke at the event. "This neighborhood can finally live up to its name of Sunshine Gardens."
