School Board to Hold Special Meeting to Discuss Member Conduct

The meeting comes shortly after a meeting in which Trustee Shirley Hoch walked out, citing board misconduct.

The board will hold a special meeting Tuesday afternoon at 12:55pm to discuss board member behavior and communication surrounding the superintendent search, according to Board President Maurice Goodman.

The meeting, announced Monday afternoon, comes three days after on Saturday at which the board chose to expand its search for superintendent. Trustee Shirley Hoch left that meeting early, saying she couldn’t be party to violating the Brown Act.

The Brown Act is California’s open meeting law that is meant to ensure transparency in government. Hoch implied that the board was delving into non-agenda items during its closed session, not permitted under the Brown Act.

Board President Maurice Goodman denied that allegation and said the board will be discussing “numerous things” at its Tuesday meeting, which will be open to the public.

Hoch said she has no plans to officially pursue the matter further.

“I think they got my point,” she said. “All I’ve been told [about Tuesday’s meeting] is it’s about board protocols, and I don’t think it’s all about me.”
