San Mateo County Teachers Get Pay Raises, Job Security through 2015

Teachers will receive retroactive pay increases and better health benefits.

After 10 months of negotiations, the San Mateo County Superintendent of Schools and the San Mateo County Educators Association came to an agreement this week keeping teachers employed with increasing salaries through June 30, 2015. 

The tentative agreement, which must still be ratified, covers covers the 124 teachers and support staff, according to Nancy Magee, spokesperson for the San Mateo County Office of Education.
See highlights of the deal below:

  • Salary increases that include 2 percent retroactive to July 1, 2012 and 2 percent increase retroactive to Jan. 1, 2013, 3 percent increase in 2013-2014 and 2 percent increase in 2014-2015
  • Increase in employer contribution for health and welfare benefits to $750 per month that will provide coverage for a single employee and $50 monthly increases in the subsequent two years
  • Employer contribution for retirees health benefits at the rate of $750 per month for two years to a limited number of retirees that meet the criteria·      Increase in class size of one student in special education classes on integrated sites
  • Change in pay for Extended School Year to an hourly rate
  • Consistent work hours and days for all members in the bargaining unit
"The San Mateo County Superintendent of Schools and SMCEA are hopeful that this agreement clears the way for the County Office and its teaching staff to move forward together in their work of serving the educational needs of students," the county office said in a press release Thursday.
