Meet A New Counselor At SSF High

South San Francisco Unified School District has several new hires. Ashley Tomlinson, profiled here, is one of SSF High's two new counselors.

As South City parents and students prepare for the 2012-2013 school year, Patch is publishing a series of profiles of the district's new hires.

Last week, Patch posted a with El Camino High's new principal, David Putney. Below are questions Ashley Tomlinson, a new hire at SSF High, answered via email.

If you are not from South City, where are you from, how long have you lived in SSF, and what brought
you here?

I grew up in the beautiful coastal city of Santa Barbara, CA. After high
school, I wanted to experience a different environment for college. I decided
to attend the University of San Francisco, because I love the bay area for
its energy and diversity. I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communication
and continued my education at USF to obtain a Master of Arts in School
Counseling.

What's your professional background?

I have always enjoyed working with kids and during college, I volunteered
at several after-school, non-profit, and tutoring/mentoring programs. During
my graduate program at USF, I interned at James Denman Middle School
in San Francisco and Dublin High School in Dublin. More recently, I was
employed as a high school counselor at San Ramon Valley High School and
Dougherty Valley High School in San Ramon.

What excites you about working in South City or SSF High in particular?

I’m very excited to join the Warriors family because I love the diversity and
sense of community amongst the students and faculty.

What are the best and toughest parts of your job?

The best part of my job is watching my students grow and change
throughout the year and helping them reach their goals and aspirations.

With such large student bodies, it’s hard to make as big of an impact in
students’ lives because of the time restraints in each day. It’s important to
honor every student’s experience and break through this difficult barrier.

Are there any events, deadlines, or programs you want to remind students
or parents about?

Back to School Night is on Tuesday, August 21st at 6:00pm. See you there!
