Gilead Workday at Spruce School

Nearly 100 volunteers from the biopharmaceutical firm turn out on a Sunday to organize, plant, decorate and clean.

Nearly 100 volunteers from the biopharmaceutical company Gilead visited Spruce Elementary School this weekend, and they came to work.

With a little help from SSFUSD Superintendent Alejandro Hogan, Mayor Kevin Mullin and district facilities director Jeff Bonner, the crew restored, organized, innovated and beautified the campus.

The nonprofit Rebuilding Together arranged the date, which included:

  • Revamping the garden with new fruit trees and student work tables;
  • Reorganizing the library and lab, with a book character wall, a new teacher work room and floor-to-ceiling secure paper storage;
  • Refurbishing the Coach room with fabric panels, new desks and bright bulletin boards;
  • Cleaned the cafeteria;
  • Installed shelving in multiple closets and storage areas.

And that's just for starters.

"It was an amazing day," said principal Rebecca Vyduna. "Definitely in the top 10 of my career.  I can’t stop smiling."
