El Camino HS Freshman Asks For Help

Victoria Rodriguez hopes to travel to Europe this summer as part of the People to People Ambassador Program.

A national program started more than 50 years ago may be a 15-year-old South San Francisco girl's ticket to a view of the world.

Victoria Rodriguez, a freshman at El Camino High School, has been selected by People to People—a program whose website states it "offers extraordinary, life-changing educational travel opportunities for students, athletes, educators, and professionals"—to travel to Europe this summer, provided she raises enough money to fund the experience.

Rodriguez needs to raise $7,200 to cover the cost of her 20-day excursion to France, Greece, and Italy; right now, she's about $2,000 away from her goal.  She will stay with local families in the European nations, visit landmarks and learn foreign cultures, policies, and customs.

Rodriguez and her family are working hard to raise the money. On Saturday, they're holding a fundraiser at in San Bruno from 2-4 p.m., where you can eat your fill for a $30 ticket.

They're also holding a "phoneraiser": through July 8, they're collecting donations of old cell phones, working or not. You can drop off your old phones at at 387 Grand Avenue, or call Rodriguez's mother, Valeria Rodriguez, at 650-834-2231 to arrange a pickup. To buy a ticket to the fundraiser, call Valeria Rodriguez or email her at vrodriguez00@gmail.com.
