District May Postpone Transitional Kindergarten

With the state budget up in the air, staff is advising the school board to postpone the program.

School district staff is recommending the board postpone starting a transitional kindergarten class this year, but instead continue to allow children who will turn 5 by December 2 to enroll as normal in the regular kindergarten class. 

Even though the state legislature passed a law in 2010 that would gradually limit kindergarten enrollment to children who turn 5 by Sept. 1, proposed cuts in the state budget have put implementation in question. Gov. Jerry Brown has , and the legislature has until June 15 to approve the budget, creating uncertainty about the program.
