Deadline Looms To Fill School Board Vacancies

Those interested in being considered should apply by Jan. 9.

The deadline for those interested in applying to join the school board is quickly approaching.

Those interested should apply for consideration to be appointed to one of the two chairs left open by Mark Olbert and Carrie Du Bois by Jan. 9 at 3 p.m.

On Dec. 15, the San Carlos school district chose an appointment process over a special election to fill two vacancies, a decision the board says will fill the vacancies more quickly and inexpensively.

The openings were created after member Mark Olbert was elected to the city council and Carrie Du Bois was elected to the Sequoia School Board.

The school district chose an appointment process over a special election that would have cost the school district up to $60,000 and left both seats empty until June 2012.

“It would be near impossible for the board to function with only three members for the next six months, so a special election was just impractical,” said school board member Seth Rosenblatt.

All candidates will have a chance to address the board at the Jan. 12 meeting.

“We seem to be getting a lot of interest from community members,” said superintendent Craig Baker. “I’m optimistic that the board will have a number of qualified individuals from which to choose.”

Those interested should follow the link below to access the application.

I believe Peter Tzifas showed, during the election, that he is fully qualified for and interested in a position on the School Board. I've worked closely with him on the City's Transportation and Circulation Commission, which he has chaired since 2010. It would be logical and appropriate for the Board to appoint him to one of the vacant seats.
