"For most kids, it's their first trip to DC," said music director Benjamin Latham. "We're showing off what is music in the state of California to the entire nation."

"I'm pretty excited," said rising senior Kristen Medrano, 16, who plays the bass clarinet. She said she's looking forward to touring museums and memorials on her first trip to DC.

In addition to playing "America the Glorious" during the parade, the jazz band will perform at a retirement community for military officers and the symphonic band will hold a concert at the World War II memorial. The 38 students will also have a chance to sightsee during their five day trip.

Last week, Latham held the students to a high standard as he led them through their last rehearsal before they left town late Thursday night. Watch the video in the top right-hand corner to see the band perform the national anthem.
