30 Under 30: Eugenie Obina

Eugenie Obina's videography skills are far beyond her years.

We recently asked you to nominate young leaders in North San Mateo County for Patch's "30 under 30" series recognizing young leaders.

We've been impressed by the talented and influential young people in our area, and now we bring you the first of our "30 under 30" profiles. We'll continue publishing them regularly until we hit 30, and we invite you to continue sending nominations of people who you feel should be honored. To nominate someone, send an email to drew@patch.com with the person's name, contact information and a short description of why they are a young leader.

Why did you choose your hobby/profession?

As a hobby, videography is an interesting field to work with. You basically get to capture the moment and take that footage to edit and be creative with it.

What accomplishment are you most proud of?

In videography, the accomplishment I'm mostly proud of is having the privilege to direct/co-direct for segments in school. In my Video Art class, I've directed my group on what to do for our segments, how to edit them, and their jobs when we are producing the school's announcements. As a Historian-Tech in my Leadership class, I also direct segments and edit them. Some segments were actually produced within one to two days. Recently, I worked on my Leadership class' video yearbook and spent countless hours of filming, gathering all the footage, editing, and compressing. This thirty minute yearbook took about two to three weeks to complete.

What do you hope to accomplish before graduation?

Before graduation, I hope that I'll be able to take the Teacher Assistant position in the Video Art class and become the main director. In my Historian-Tech commission for 2012-2013, I'll be the only one returning which means I will be guiding my new commissioners. I hope that I'll be able to carry on the legacy of the Historian-Tech commission and make sure that it will be preserved for future generations.

What are your plans for college?

My plans for college is to major in accounting. Although it is a totally different field, I'm sure that my skills in videography will be maintained.

What are you goals for the future?

My goals for the future is to be an accountant. Everyone needs an accountant, right? I would love to work for YouTube, Google, or any broadcasting stations in the future. Another goal of mine would be to visit Japan again and do whatever I didn't get to experience in my last visit. I traveled a lot when I was younger and Japan is the country that's on my "must revisit" list.
