The Week Ahead: Possible Curb on New Tobacco Retailers

School board takes first steps on Measure J-funded energy overhaul.

The week kicks off with a project to curb Sudden Oak Death: Beginning today,  the Mid-Peninsula Regional Open Space District will remove some 250 Bay trees within 15 feet of 49 healthy oaks to help control the spread of the disease. The project will continue through July 28 in various locations with the help of young California Conservation Corps volunteers.

The San Bruno Police Department will promote four law enforcement officers and welcome three new hires in a badge and swearing-in ceremony at 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 13.

The South San Francisco City Council meeting Wednesday includes a public hearing on an interim ordinance that was adopted as an urgency measure: extending a citywide moratorium on new retail tobacco stores.

The South San Francisco School District meets at 7 p.m. July 14 in the SSF High in the Library Information Center.

Earlier in the day, the district’s bond facilities subcommittee will get an update on the energy savings initiative, a project expected to provide nearly 100 local green jobs and is expected to save the district $20 million through a 1.68 megawatt solar and efficiency project spanning 15 elementary, middle, and high school sites.

It is the first use of funds provided by Measure J, a bond measure approved by voters in November 2010 that raised $162 million specifically to improve school infrastructure and enhance the student learning environment.

The group, which includes two new members, will also hear presentations by three playground equipment manufacturers.
