South San Francisco Family Remembers Slain American Sailor

Phyllis Macay had joined friends to travel the globe by yacht.

There was an impromptu press conference this morning in front of the as the family of one of the four fatal victims of a Somali pirate attack remembered a woman they called an “avid sailor.”

“We are terribly distraught and devastated over this news this morning,” Nina Crossland told reporters this morning about the death of her aunt, Phyllis Macay, according to KTVU.com. “She was living her dream.”

Macay’s mother is a South San Francisco resident who lives in the , said Laura Gigi, Magnolia Senior Center program coordinator.

Macay, a resident of Seattle, had been sailing with friends on a yacht trip around the world when their boat was hijacked last week off the coast of Oman.

The family has asked for privacy, said Susan Kennedy, assistant to the South San Francisco city manager. Kennedy was on hand at Magnolia this morning to prevent traffic and parking problems, she said.
