New Mayor Appointment at Special Meeting

Following city procedure, the council will appoint a new mayor and vice mayor this evening.

South San Francisco City Council will hold a special meeting on Tuesday for its annual reorganization of the council.

Current vice mayor, Pedro Gonzalez, is slated to step into the mayor's seat and Councilmember Karyl Matsumoto is expected to take the seat of vice mayor, also called "Mayor Pro Tem."

Though city councilmembers can technically vote for any current serving member, it is most likely that the reorganization will follow the precalculated rotation order.

Mayor Richard Garbarino remembers only once in South City history, about 30 years ago, that a councilmember scheduled to become mayor was passed over and eventually appointed to the seat the following year.

Councilmembers Addiego, Matsumoto and Gonzalez are currently serving terms that end in Nov. 2013. Garbarino's term ends Nov. 2015.

State Assemblyman Elect Kevin Mullin, will leave during a term that ends in Nov. 2015.

The special meeting on Tuesday will be at 7 p.m. in Council Chambers at 33 Arroyo Drive. The meeting will include an open period for public comments.
