Gas Pipeline In SSF to Undergo Testing

PG&E will do work tomorrow at Hillside Boulevard and Holly Ave; nearby residents should not be alarmed if they smell gas.

Pacific Gas & Electric is planning to perform hydrostatic testing on a natural gas line in South San Francisco tomorrow.

The work is expected to take place between the hours of 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. at Hillside Boulevard and Holly Ave.

Residents near that area are advised that they may smell natural gas emissions, which is a normal biproduct of the test.

During the procedure, segments of the underground lines are dug up and disconnected, the gas is vented and then high-pressure water is pushed through them to check for leaks.

"During this process natural gas is used to bleed air out of the line, so that it can be placed back into service," said a city report.

The test Tuesday is part of an ongoing project that will inspect the fortitude of gas line 132, which spans over San Bruno Mountain to Schwerin Street and Geneva Ave in Daly City.

"A relatively small about of natural gas is released to atmosphere as part of this work and may result in residents smelling gas and hearing noise," said the report.

Phone calls may be placed to residents to remind them of the work as well.

"We want to assure you that this situation is safe," said the city report.

The testing is an ongoing effort by PG&E to prevent another natural gas pipeline explosion similar to the one in San Bruno that killed eight people, leveled 38 homes and sparked a widespread investigation of the company's practices and service.

Any resident who has questions or concerns about the smell of gas is encouraged to call PG&E 24 hours a day at 1-800-743-5000 or call 9-1-1 immediately.
