Gas Pipeline Retrofit Scheduled for Completion Dec. 1

Construction on Line 132 is set for completion December 1 in order to maintain Peninsula gas system, PG&E representatives told the city council.

Siesmic upgrades replacing a portion of a South San Francisco gas pipeline will be completed by December, representatives from PG&E told the city council Wednesday evening.

Line 132 has been out of service since May due to ongoing tests and inspections to ensure safety, said Ashlie Simpson of PG&E government relations.

“We did indicate, using very conservative measures, that this segment of pipeline, specifically the one that we’ll be doing work on, could be vulnerable in case of a very large seismic activity near the pipeline itself,” Simpson said.

The pipe runs along Mission Road just south of the BART station to Antoinette Lane, along El Camino and ends at the intersection of West Orange Avenue and A Street.

The pipeline will be replaced in 2012, but as a temporary measure, a 24-inch steel pipe is being inserted into the current 30-inch pipe in order to maintain gas systems.

“This segment of pipeline that we will be working on is integral to our gas system through the Peninsula,” Simpson said. “We need to have it in service before we hit our winter peak.”

Construction on this portion of the project is set for completion Dec. 1.

“The Dec. 1 date is based on the historical record of cold winter events,” said Alex Vayntrub, senior project manager.

If the Dec. 1 date is not achieved, representatives said gas would not be stalled and city residents would not face any inconveniences.

Simpson said PG&E is still very committed to replacing the pipe in the coming year.

“I’m pleased that PG&E is exercising an abundance of caution in this regard given recent events regarding San Bruno,” said Mayor Kevin Mullin.
