Federal Funding to Continue for Local Low-Income Housing

The South San Francisco Housing Authority received $105,000 from the federal government.

The federal government will continue to fund low-income housing locally, Congresswoman Jackie Speier announced Friday.

The Department of Housing and Urban Development has awarded the San Mateo County Housing Authority $221,000, while the South San Francisco Housing Authority received $105,000 and the San Francisco Housing Authority was awarded about $11 million, according to Speier, D-Hillsborough.

The money will help the agencies continue to provide affordable housing for low and moderate income families.

"These funds may be used for development, financing, modernization, and management improvements of public housing in our communities," Speier said in a statement.

"They represent a continued commitment by the federal government to ensuring hard-working men and women, as well as seniors and persons with disabilities, can remain in our communities and help to keep them diverse and reflective of America," she said.

A 109-unit affordable housing development at 636 El Camino Real in South San Francisco is nearing completion and .

As of Dec. 31, 2011, the median family income for a 1-person family qualifying for low-income housing in San Mateo County is $71,000; a 2-person family is $81,300; a 3-person family is $91,450; and a 4-person family is $101,600.
