Council Meeting Preview: Loose Ends on Medical Marijuana Ban and More

The city council holds its regular meeting Wednesday night at 7 p.m. in the Municipal Services Building.

At , the council is poised to finalize its recent position against medical marijuana collectives by approving a permit appeal dating back to 2009.

On Oct. 1, 2009, the Planning Commission approved a conditional use permit to allow Island of Health, a medical marijuana collective, to operate a dispensary at 175 Utah Avenue, according to a staff report. Later that month, neighbors appealed the permit.

That appeal was never officially resolved; on Oct. 28, 2009, the city council adopted a moratorium on medical marijuana collectives. That moratorium was later .

In May of this year, after a public outcry and drug incidents at local schools. Council members Mark Addiego and Karyl Matsumoto dissented.

This Wednesday, the council will formally vote on the original permit appeal.

Also at Wednesday's meeting:

  • The council will consider awarding a consulting services contract to Carollo Engineers of Walnut Creek, California, for the Water Quality Control Plant Upgrades 
  • The council will consider awarding the construction contract to Chiang C.M. Construction, Inc. of San Francisco, California, for the Fire Station 63 upgrades
  • The council will consider adopting a City of Service designation.
