Commission Postpones Release of Political District Maps

The first draft of new political district maps splits South City in half.

Last week, the city council stopped short of sending a letter to the county expressing concerns over preliminary redistricting maps that would split the city between two state Senate and two Assembly districts, even though some council members fear the split would mute South San Francisco's political influence.

"“We want our voice to be heard,” said Mayor Kevin Mullin, . “We are the only city in the county that’s split right down the middle.”

Now the California Citizens Redistricting Commission has postoned releasing the second draft of the maps, which were supposed to come out on July 14. The commission, which is tasked with redrawing the lines that separate political districts to "preserve communities of interest," while shifting them in accordance with the 2010 census, now plans to release the new draft on July 28.
