ACLU Fights Shackling for Local Resident in Deportation Case

A suit filed Monday seeks to end the practice of shackling nonviolent immigration detainees, including local resident Uelian De Abadia-Peixoto.

The American Civil Liberties Union and the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights filed suit on behalf of a South San Francisco woman and other members of a potential class action lawsuit to prevent the widespread shackling of adult immigration detainees, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

South San Francisco resident Uelian De Abadia-Peixoto is shackled by the wrists, ankles and waist when she goes to court for her political asylum case, the Chronicle reported. She is fighting deportation to Brazil and says she fled domestic abuse.

The suit seeks to mount a class action claim on behalf of thousands of detainees to secure a court order that would ban shackles for individuals who don't pose a violent threat.
