93-Year-Old Vet Fights VA for Compensation

The Northern California VA is experiencing extreme delays with disability claims and problems with accuracy.

Jake Ventrello, 93, is a World War II veteran who participated in D-Day and the Battle of the Bulge. Now he's trying to win against the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Ventrello, a resident of South San Francisco, was one of over 200 veterans who showed up at a forum Monday at the War Memorial Veterans Building in San Francisco, hosted by Congressional Reps. Jackie Speier and Barbara Lee, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

After 10 years of war, delays in VA disability claims have become severe, with Northern California having some of the longest in the system, as well as problems with accuracy. Monday's forum was a chance for veterans to air their grievances and meet with claims representatives to move their cases forward.

Ventrello, who is now in a wheelchair, has been trying to increase his compensation since 2010. The last word from the VA requested that he see his doctors again to see if he had improved.
