South San Francisco Octogenarian Dies in Car Crash

Shogo Hatori's car flipped over after driving off Interstate 80.

An 80-year-old South San Francisco resident died in a car crash yesterday outside of Vallejo.

The Napa County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Shogo Hatori, said Capt. Tracey Stuart.

At about 11:23am California Highway Patrol officers responded to the accident on westbound Interstate 80 between Vallejo and Fairfield.

Hatori, who was driving a 2010 Ford Fusion, pulled off the interstate onto the right shoulder and drove down an embankment where his vehicle overturned and landed about 200 feet from the roadway, according to the CHP.

Officer Craig Kuehl said the cause of the accident is still under investigation but it’s possible that there was a medical emergency.

Witnesses confirmed that the vehicle drove off the interstate in a straight line and didn’t brake before launching off the embankment, the CHP said.

Hatori was wearing his seat belt and air bags were deployed.

The Fairfield Fire Department pronounced him dead at the scene at 11:50am.

Stuart said an autopsy would be conducted tomorrow to determine the cause of death.

Since it was raining at the time of the collision, the CHP is reminding drivers to slow down during wet weather.
