VIDEO: Red Light Cameras Losing Money, Not Reducing Crashes

Do South City's traffic cameras improve safety or are they ineffective?

South San Francisco's red light cameras are losing the city money and haven't reduced crashes at their intersections, according to an investigation by NBC Bay Area.

The cameras, positioned at the intersections of El Camino Real with Westborough Boulevard and Hickey Boulevard, cost the city $485,259 a year but generate only $435,162 in ticket revenue.

Police Chief Mike Massoni, who sat down with television station, said that although crashes haven't been reduced at those intersections, they've been reduced overall due to greater driver awareness of hazards.
