Police Teach Citizens How To Shoot 'Em Up

On Tuesday night, the police department's Citizens' Academy made its trip to the firing range.

The offers the Citizens' Academy as a way to teach local residents about the inner workings of the police department.

Residents who sign up for the 12-week course learn about the SWAT team, the K9 unit and how the department hires officers. Students also get hands-on experience about what it's like to be an officer, including a trip to the firing range.

On Tuesday night, this session's Citizens' Academy made a trip to the department's firing range in the basement of the police department. Officers instructed students on the basics of gun safety and how to shoot. Many participants were firing a gun for the first time.

The Citizens' Academy is open to people over the age of 18 who live or work in South San Francisco. Classes are offered in English or Spanish. To enroll, call the police department at (650) 829-3931.
