UPDATE: Two Mountain Lions Spotted Monday Night

The catS were spotted four hours and 15 miles apart.

In a matter of hours two mountain lions were spotted in different parts of San Mateo County Monday night, San Mateo County emergency officials said.

The first sighting was around 7 p.m. near state Highway 92 just east of state Highway 35, emergency officials said.

About four hours later and less than 15 miles away around 11:15 p.m. a big cat was seen just east of Lindenbrook Road in Woodside.

Emergency officials offer the following tips for those living in mountain lion territory, which includes more than half of California:

  • If you see a mountain lion DO NOT APPROACH IT, especially one that is feeding or with offspring. Most mountain lions will try to avoid confrontation.
  • Avoid hiking or jogging when mountain lions are most active—dawn, dusk, and at night.
  • Keep a close watch on small children.
  • If you encounter a mountain lion, do not run; instead, face the animal, make noise and try to look bigger by waving your arms; throw rocks or other objects.
  • Pick up small children.

Pretty Asian... January 12, 2012 at 12:07 AM
I totally disagree with the tip that says if you happen to face a mountain lion.... cuz a hungry stomach knows no bounds and the best way to safety is to flee, escape, and hide. with the modern age and population, these devouring carnivorous beasts must no longer be in the wild but must be taken cared of in the zoo. wish they are just dogs but they are not... they are lions that prey on us humans they see when they get hungry.

I disagree with pretty asian they should not be in a zoo. They should be able to stay WILD. Some humans have no regard for wild life and being in a zoo is not the answer. We need to learn how to live with the wild creatures. We are moving in on their space.

I pray you don't meet any mountain lions, your belief in the, "turn and run" theory for dealing with mountain lion / human contact will surly lead to the next Patch Breaking News Update.
