Mountain Lion Cubs Spotted in Half Moon Bay

The pair of cubs were seen Friday evening.

Two mountain lion cubs were spotted in Half Moon Bay on Friday evening, according to San Mateo County emergency officials.

The cubs were sighted in the 800 block of Correas Avenue at about 5:45 p.m. Sheriff's officials and Animal Control responded to the scene.

If you see a mountain lion DO NOT APPROACH IT, especially one that is feeding or with offspring. Most mountain lions will try to avoid confrontation.

Here are a few tips:

  • Avoid hiking or jogging when mountain lions are most active—dawn, dusk, and at night.
  • Keep a close watch on small children.
  • If you encounter a mountain lion, do not run; instead, face the animal, make noise and try to look bigger by waving your arms; throw rocks or other objects.
  • Pick up small children.

Here's a link to a Western Wildlife Outreach public service announcement. It applies anywhere there are mountain lions. http://vimeo.com/channels/westernwildlife/54333173 Let's hope that mom rounded up the kittens, and they're safely back in more appropriate habitat.

The cubs were under a garage on Correas, the resident took a beautiful photo that dispels any thoughts of them being Bobcats.... I know of two others who have seem the cubs this week. Hopefully the police will inform the neibours of these exotic little visitors, oh! don't forget about de Momma!

i just learned that these two cubs were shot to death by Fish and Game. !!!! WHY?? They could have been tasered, caught, and taken care of. Where is the MOM? She is sorely pissed, I can tell you. And I am sorely pissed that F & G KILLED these cubs. That was NOT NECESSARY. I am angry. I am angry!!!

I agree Martha, unless they were acting aggressive, they should have just trapped and released them. They are so adorable.... but I know they can be dangerous. I guess the Sheriffs know what they are doing and have all the education on these animals. It was a public safety issue. I guess if they attack a child, it would be serious law suits and then we are talking a dead child. They should have called in the Feds and have them tranquilized and released.

I am with you Martha!! We as humans have no regards for animals it's just easier to kill them. We have moved in on their territory we keep building more and more what do people expect? The mountain lions and other creatures are just trying to survive. Shame on F&G
