Employees Evacuated, 2 Hospitalized After Reports of a Pungent Smell

The cause of the smell and the employees' respiratory problems were unknown as of Tuesday afternoon.

About 20 people were evacuated from work Tuesday afternoon when a pungent smell was reported in a building in South San Francisco, a fire marshal said.

Firefighters responded to a report of a strong aroma coming from inside Soonest Express Global Logistics at 228 E. Harris Ave. at about noon, South San Francisco Fire Marshal Luis Da Silva said.

About 20 employees were evacuated from the building and two had to be transported to a hospital for respiratory issues, Da Silva said. The two are expected to survive, he said.

A hazardous materials crew entered and searched the building.

No cause of the smell was found, the fire marshal said. The building was ventilated and the employees were allowed back in at about 3 p.m., he said.
