Early-Morning Fatal Crash on San Mateo Bridge

The crash occurred just after 3:30 a.m. west of the high rise.

A flat tire appears to have caused a two-car crash on the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge early Thursday morning that killed a woman, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash was reported at about 3:30 a.m. on westbound state Highway 92 east of Pier 1 on the bridge, CHP Officer Art Montiel said.

A preliminary investigation revealed the woman was in the rear passenger seat of a Honda Accord, which had sustained a flat tire and was traveling west on the bridge in the No. 3 lane at a low rate of speed and with its emergency lights activated, Montiel said.

A Range Rover, also traveling west in the No. 3 lane but at a higher rate of speed, approached and struck the rear of the Honda, according to Montiel.
