Man Charged in Machete Attack

Pleads not guilty to attempted murder.

A South San Francisco man has been charged in the machete attack on a friend who did not invite him to a June 26 barbecue.

Pedro Ramirez Garcia, 32, entered a not guilty plea today to charges of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, making terrorist threats and resisting arrest. He remains in custody on a $500,000 bond, and was ordered to return to court on July 19.

Garcia, who allegedly had been drinking with the friend earlier in the day, crashed the party drunk, making inappropriate comments to female guests. He was asked to leave, a police report indicated.

Enraged, Garcia allegedly lifted his shirt to show rifle ammunition tucked into his waistband and announced he would return with a gun. Witnesses told police he returned instead with a machete, charged the host and threatened to kill him. After a chase and a struggle over the weapon, he bit the host -- who sustained numerous cuts -- in his back.

Police arrived as Garcia attempted to flee.

As Garcia was being placed in a patrol car to be taken to jail in Redwood City, he bolted, still in handcuffs, police said.

An officer tackled Garcia after a brief chase.

He was arraigned in San Mateo County Superior Court on June 28 but did not enter a plea. He is being represented by the Public Defender Program.
