Letter to the Editor: Reader Supports de Vera

Sarah Creeley praises Hercules City Council member on a vote about selling a public parcel.

This opinion was submitted by Patch reader Sarah Creeley.

When I choose my leaders I want people like Myrna DeVera, an outstanding former Hercules Mayor, and current City Council member. Myrna advocates for things I care about.

On June 26, 2012, Hercules City Council Meeting Agenda Item 15, number 10, Myrna DeVera asked the Council to wait on a decision regarding a sale to Summerhill Homes. No appraisal of the parcel, commonly known as Victoria Crescent, was done, which was shocking enough in itself. In addition,  the developer was not present at the meeting, and the Purchase and Sale Agreement was incomplete. Common sense dictated a need for more information before locking into an agreement. I encourage everyone to go online and view this part of the City Council meeting. It is outrageous that 4 members of our City Council voted to just go ahead with another potentially misguided development.

I stand with Myrna, a true leader, who genuinely cares about our community. Myrna has advocated for more transparency between our city government and the people they serve. She is in support of drafting a sunshine policy for our city which will result in greater transparency and open decision making. Whenever I have had questions about developments, and have emailed my questions to Myrna, she has been prompt and thorough in her responses. Herculeans are lucky to have a Council member like Myrna DeVera!  I stand with Myrna!

Ok, this editorial was about Myrna and a transparent government. Myrna is right on for seeking Sunshine ordinances. With a more transparent government, I'll have a better idea if I am going to re-elect any of the incumbents. If I vote for the incumbents, am I voting for more closed-sessions? For me, seeing a candidate as a member of the Democratic party is a plus for me. Candidate Simmons has scored more points in my book, revealing himself as a Democrat. I'm guessing he is somewhat towards the center as I am, yes? Bill Kelley has also scored points by signing up for the Democratic Club, especially if he sits on the fence as he had not stated his affiliation, so maybe he was an independent? I respect that. I am half tempted to switch to independent as a protest of many of the misguided policies of the Democrats. They share the blame for screwing the middle class who is being used as a piggy bank for every social program imaginable. Manuel DeVera said he was selecting (hand-picking?) devoted Democrats as evidenced by their track record of supporting (as a piggy bank) causes. He needs to understand that it is hard to commit to any party in any way these days when the 2 largest parties are both screwing America.

By the way, I associate an excess of closed-door sessions with one particular party, that being the Republicans. With such, I think Richard Milhouse Nixon. The last republican I voted for was Bush Sr., a very good man in my book. I haven't voted Republican since. Is Duran a Republican? For this reason, I am withdrawing my support for Dan Romero. It is nothing against him as a person. My dislike for the current Republican party is that strong. They are the party of war and hate and the super wealthy, of which I am none. Anyone associated with them will not get my vote, not even for the PTA. This does not place me in "Camp Myrna." I will review her performance if she should decide to run again.

It's a lost cause, Richard. The adults have left the room.
