South San Francisco Recognized for Promoting a Healthier Community and Workforce

Recently, Kaiser Permanente San Mateo Area Public Affairs, in partnership with The League of California Cities and Keenan &Associates, recognized the city of South San Francisco for its efforts to promote health in the community and its workforce.

Matt Jacobs, Kaiser Permanente's Community & Government Relations Manager for the San Mateo Area was on hand to present the Fit City Award to Mayor Pedro Gonzalez and the city council for their work to improve the health of residents and employees. The Fit City Award is part of the HEAL (Healthy Eating, Active Living ) Cities Campaign that supports city create more options for physical activity and healthy food. The Fit City Award acknowledges SSF’s policies in the areas of land use, healthy food retail and employee wellness.

The city was also recognized with a HEAL Cities Workforce Health Award - a $5,000 grant to improve workforce health. Twenty-two cities from throughout California applied and South San Francisco was one of the five final recipients. The city already has an employee wellness program in place and showed a readiness to take their program to the next level that would be enhanced by the grant.
The $5,000 grant is for Workforce Health Planning through Kaiser Permanente's Health Works Program. Kaiser Permanente will also be providing 1-on-1 consulting to to the city to improve Workplace Health.

The Health Works Program covers a number of key areas including on-sight biometrics screening, health education classes, online total health assessment, physical activity programs and an online nutrition program. What does all this mean... city employees will have greater access to programs to help them live healthier lives and therefore be more productive at work.
