Families in Santa Clara and San Mateo will benefit from the donation.

Nearly 2,000 families in Silicon Valley will get meals thanks to a donation by Panera Bread.

At the ribbon-cutting event for the new Panera in Mountain View Friday, owner Jeff Burril presented a $1,000 check to Second Harvest Food Bank.

"This $1,000 will provide meals to 2,000 families in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties," said Lily Wong, a development associate with SHFB, as she accepted the check. "If every restaurant took on your model we could eliminate hunger and make sure no child goes to bed hungry."

The donation stemmed from a promotion Panera, located at 1035-A El Monte Ave., held where they donated $1 for each customer that signed up for a "My Panera" card by June 30.
