Democrats Benignly Invade San Diego

A Patch blogger headed to San Diego for the annual state Democratic Party Convention.

I've just returned from the Democratic Party Convention in San Diego this past weekend, and I'd like to share a couple of items of interest to me and perhaps to you.

Of the speeches so common at conventions, from Senator Dianne Feinstein, Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Governor Jerry Brown, on down through the constitutional officers, Attorney General Kamala Harris, with her "Too Big to Fail" theme, was the bell ringer.

She immediately followed Lieutenant Gavin Newsom's speech, and many wondered if he too stood joining the 2,000 in attendance who rose to their feet at her speech's end. Of course, the two are potential opponents for the governorship should Jerry Brown pack it in after one term.

Democrats are known for their emphasis on diversity, almost to a fault, and the various caucuses reflected this "Big Tent" theme.

Of the twenty or so meeting at this three day gathering, one could find the Progressive, the LGBT, Native-American, Irish-American, Asian/Pacific Islander, Disabilities and Children's (presumably people interested in chilldren's issues, not kids themselves) caucuses.

San Mateo County was well represented with over 40 locals attending a Saturday lunch off the convention campus. San Diego's Gaslight District is a fine example of what redevelopment can accomplish, properly monitored. San Mateo County cities' redevelopment projects are other examples of well-planned activities. Those are gone for the foreseeable future, but more about redevelopment in a future blog.
