Ruraq Maki, which means "Hands that Create" in Quechua, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating economic opportunities for low income female artisans working with traditional crafts.
Since 2009, Ruraq Maki has helped nearly 85 incarcerated women in Peru increase their yearly earnings and has provided free educational workshop bi-yearly. Women participating in our program learn new, income generating skills that can be applied in the future upon their release. In 2012, Ruraq Maki launched Manos Independientes, serving rural weavers in Bolivia living in extreme poverty and struggling to provide for their children. Since it’s inception, Manos Independientes has reached 50 women in three communities in the Andes of Bolivia.
