The South San Francisco Public Library and the Historical Society of South San Francisco are proud to present a public viewing of A Trip Down Market Street, a film shot from a camera mounted on the front of a San Francisco streetcar four days before the earthquake of 1906. The images in this film may be some of the last images captured of San Francisco in the early 1900s because much of the city was destroyed in the earthquake and fire. This film is part of a special 60 Minutes segment from the CBS Archives in which Morley Safer reports on this astonishing film and the detective work it took to determine its exact age.
David Kiehn, Historian with the Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum in Fremont, is the guest speaker. Mr. Kiehn researched and identified the date of this historic film, using show-biz trade publications, contemporary newspapers, vehicle registration records and weather reports.
This Free program takes place on Monday, Sept. 16, 2013, from 7:00pm - 8:30pm in the Community Room, South San Francisco Municipal Services Building, 33 Arroyo Drive, South San Francisco. Refreshments will be served.
