: “I would ask them if they were ready to put themselves at the end of the line for everything in life - attention, time, money, love - and if they can honestly answer yes to themselves, then I would say they are ready to be parents. That child needs to be their total responsibility and daily focus because he WILL take over your life. By daily focus I don't mean to GIVE OR BUY him everything - no it means doing what is best for him each and every day until he can fend for himself. Not what is easiest, most expensive, or what the latest talk show tells you to do. It means research, never ending work, and unconditional love. Don't EXPECT the community (teachers, grandmas, childcare givers) to do YOUR job. Loving honest evaluations of your child will only help him become a better human being. Saying yes to him all the time or building him to think he is the center of the world will only set him up for pain and failure. If this sounds negative, then you are NOT ready to be a parent, but if you agree that parenting means being RESPONSIBLE for a human being, then you are ready to be a parent.”
