City Council Meeting Results

Council members address US-101 and Route 35 projects, as well as LAFCo and a possible curfew on commercial construction.

At this week’s city council meeting, the council addressed issues involving transportation infrastructure projects, a commercial construction curfew, and the possible dissolution of the San Mateo Mosquito and Vector Control District.

The council unanimously voted to proceed with the application for San Mateo County Transportation Authority funds for the US-101 Produce Ave Interchange Project. The project would create a new on-ramp and off-ramp from Produce Ave to 101, as well as a new connection from Utah Ave over the 101 to San Mateo Ave.

“It would be very helpful for the Lindenville area,” City Manager Barry Nagel said. If the TA approves it, the project would begin next year.

The council also addressed a request from the city of San Bruno for South San Francisco to cosponsor an application for TA funds to widen State Route 35 in order to alleviate traffic congestion just before the road merges with southbound I-280.

The project would cost $14.4 million. Cosponsorship would not involve financial support. Council member Matsumoto voiced concern over cosponsoring the project before securing funds for the traffic study related to the US-101 project that South City will seek to be financed by the TA as well.

Nagel said that city staff is confident that South City will not have a problem in acquiring funds for the traffic study. He said that the widening of Route 35 is not major competition in vying for a piece of the $104 million available.

The council unanimously approved the cosponsorship of the widening of State Route 35.

The council also discussed a call to dissolve the San Mateo Mosquito and Vector Control District. At Mayor Garbarino’s suggestion, the council voted to modify a letter to LAFCo, the commission that overseas the district, that supports the district remaining in tact.

South San Francisco city council members cited a lack of confidence in the . The council voted to modify the letter to encourage the district to consider reorganizing to support better management policies. LAFCo will make a final recommendation to the Board of Supervisors on July 18.

At the end of this week’s meeting, the council discussed a proposal from council member Matsumoto that would change the city’s curfew for construction from 8pm to 6pm in order to limit noise in residential areas.

The council agreed to revisit the proposal in two weeks, in order to give businesses, especially within the biotech community east of US-101, a chance to provide information about how a construction curfew would affect their operations.

The council also approved awarding a consulting agreement for the South Airport Blvd bridge project to Mark Thomas & Company.

The next city council meeting will be held on July 25 at 7pm at Municipal Services Building at 33 Arroyo Drive.
