South City's Cheap Eats

A few spots to eat well for under $25.

There are parts of the country where it is impossible to get the variety of food that we are lucky enough to take for granted here in the Bay Area. The range of culinary culture in our area is hard to beat, and the fact that a whole lot of great eats from different parts of the world are available for not a whole lot of money makes the selection even better. Here are a few of our favorite meals that won’t break the bank – most are under $25.

A couple pupusas with a side of rice and beans will fill up lunch and dinner-goers at this eat-in or take-out El Camino Real eatery, and for under $20. Mexican specialties like enchiladas and tacos are also available for about the same price.

This diner’s central location and 1950s style and pricing make it a great place to stop in for lunch. Grab a breakfast platter that will curb cravings well past lunch, or a hefty burger or sandwich, all of which come in at under $10.

A huge bowl of hearty pho and a side of spring rolls comes in at about $15 at this Grand Avenue restaurant. Featuring homestyle Vietnamese cooking, Ben Tre offers reasonable prices and a large menu full of various bun (cold vermicelli noodle) and rice dishes.

Affordable and authentic Mexican eats await diners at La Perla. Tucked away on Lux Avenue, this family business specializes in natural and organic ingredients without the huge price tag that often accompanies organic fare: $20 will keep two people well-fed here.

Under $8 for a giant sandwich (including specialty sandwiches) that will keep you full almost all day is hard to beat. In a time when sandwich prices creep ever closer, and sometimes surpass, $10, little Lucca has stayed true to the values that have made it a South City landmark: quality, delicious ingredients at fair prices. There is good reason this spot has been a lunch favorite for more than 30 years.
