PG&E Will Vent Gas Today for Safety Tests

There will be a gas smell in the air, but it shouldn't be cause for alarm.

If you smell gas today in South San Francisco, don’t be alarmed: PG&E will be venting gas from pipeline 132 in preparation for a week of scheduled safety tests.

The tests will include passing a camera through the pipeline to check for substandard pipeline segments; if any are found, they will be replaced, according to PG&E.

On May 31, PG&E plans to do a hydrostatic test on the line. It will fill the line with water at 1.5 times its usual pressure and hold it at that pressure for eight hours. If the pressure drops, any leaks will be repaired, and the pipeline won’t pass the test until it can hold the elevated pressure for a full eight hours.
