BART Celebrates 40 Years of Service

BART is collecting old school memorabilia in honor of 40 years.

BART service is over the hill this month, celebrating four decades of transporting riders throughout the Bay Area. To honor the transit system's 40 years in operation, BART officials are hoping to collect old photographs and memorabilia of years past on the train.

Throughout the next year, BART will be displaying vintage BART photographs -- such as BART agents posing in front of fare gates in orange, collared shirts and the flared pants of the 1970s -- and other transit collectibles such as old system maps, tickets, advertisements, announcements and more.

Touted as the oldest fleet in the nation, BART began serving the commuting public on Sept. 11, 1972. Transbay Tube service began just after BART's second birthday in September 1974 and Sunday service became available on July 2, 1978, according to BART records chronicled on their website.

The rest, as they say, is history. Anyone can post photos on BART's Pinterest account, available at pinterest.com/sfbart/celebrating-40-years-of-service, or through Flickr.com with the tag Bart40th. Emails can also be sent to bart40th@bart.gov.

BART officials said special promotions and events are in the works to celebrate the anniversary year, and hinted that certain stations will see fun decorations and blasts from the past to recognize the 40th year of service.
